Assessing nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards promoting femalecondom use in South African primary healthcare clinics. Femalecondoms protect against unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV; however, their uptake is very low in South Africa. Nurses are frontline healthcare workers and are uniquely positioned to promote their use to their clients . This study assesses nurses' knowledge of, attitudes to, and practices regarding the promotion of femalecondoms at selected primary healthcare facilities in the King Sabata Dalindyebo sub-district of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 2021 at five community health centres in the King Sabata Dalindyebo sub-district, South Africa. A total
Femalecondom color and scent preference in Durban, South Africa. To assess preferences for femalecondom (FC) colors and scents. Women aged 18-40 years were randomized to one of three FCs (FC2, Cupid1, Cupid2) two of which offered a choice of color and scent (red/strawberry, purple/vanilla, natural/unscented). Women could choose any variety within condom types while participating in an FC
Examining the place of the femalecondom in india's family planning program aqualitative investigation of the attitudes, opinions of key stakeholders in Pune, India. With overpopulation contributing to the depletion of planetary resources, the high rates of unintended pregnancies in India are a cause for concern. Despite the free supply of contraception options within India's national family planning initiatives, women are generally offered hormonal options as temporary spacing methods. However, femalecondoms, a much neglected but potent woman initiated, non-hormonal multipurpose prevention device, are yet to be considered for inclusion in India's contraceptive cafeteria. Thus, we aim to examine the place of femalecondoms among the contraceptive options, by analysing the perceptions of key
The Roles of Emotion Regulation, Alcohol Consumption, and Women'sCondom Request Style in Men's Coercive Condom Use Resistance Intentions. Condom use resistance (CUR) remains a significant problem, and many men employ coercive CUR strategies to avoid using condoms with partners who do not consent to unprotected sex. To assess the decision-making process underlying men's coercive CUR, the present
Perceived male partner attitudes toward the femalecondom predict female university students' use of the femalecondom. Female and male condoms are the only methods that prevent both sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and unintended pregnancy. Despite continuing high STI rates, few studies investigate factors predicting whether women initiating femalecondom (FC) use sustain
Male and femalecondoms: Their key role in pregnancy and STI/HIV prevention. Male and femalecondoms are the only available Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) that can prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections including HIV. If used correctly and consistently, condoms can provide levels of pregnancy protection similar to many hormonal methods. Condoms remain one of the most common methods used at first sexual intercourse and are relied on as a current use of contraception by adolescents in many regions of the world. Male and femalecondoms are safe and require no prescription; in particular male condoms are generally easy to access at low cost. Femalecondoms are more expensive than male condoms and less accessible; however, they have the advantage of being
Performance and Acceptability of the FC2 FemaleCondom When Used With and Without a Silicone Placebo Vaginal Ring-A Randomized, Crossover Trial. The silicone Dapivirine Vaginal Ring 25 mg, has been developed to provide an additional HIV prevention option for women. If approved for use, women will always be counselled to use condoms when using the vaginal ring for maximum protection. This paper evaluates the compatibility of femalecondoms with the ring. This was a 2-period crossover, randomized noninferiority trial. Couples in 2 sites in the United States of America were randomized to FC2 FemaleCondom (FC2) with and without a placebo silicone ring and asked to use 4 femalecondoms in each period. The primary noninferiority endpoint was the clinical failure rate during intercourse or withdrawal
Spanish validation of femalecondom attitude scale and femalecondom use in Colombian young women. Infection by HIV and other STIs and unplanned pregnancies are among the most serious problems associated with sexuality. Male and femalecondoms are the only dual-purpose devices to control both unplanned pregnancies and STIs, and studying people's attitudes toward the use of these devices are excellent ways to predict their use. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to adapt and validate the FemaleCondom Attitude Scale for Spanish language and to evaluate the use of femalecondoms in Colombian population. For that purpose, a total of 387 Colombian women aged 23.68 years in average were asked to respond to the FemaleCondom Attitude Scale, the Sexual Opinion Survey, and the UCLA
The evaluation of the Woman'sCondom marketing approach: What value did peer-led interpersonal communication add to the promotion of a new femalecondom in urban Lusaka? During a mass media campaign accompanying the launch of the Maximum Diva Woman'sCondom (WC) in Lusaka, Zambia, a cluster-randomized evaluation was implemented to measure the added impact of a peer-led interpersonal communication (IPC) intervention on the awareness and uptake of the new femalecondom (FC). The WC and mass media campaign were introduced simultaneously in 40 urban wards in April 2016; half of the wards were randomly assigned to the treatment (IPC intervention) with cross-sectional surveys conducted before (n = 2,364) and one year after (n = 2,430) the start of the intervention. A pre-specified intention
Femalecondom use for men who have sex with men Rapid Review #74: November 2013 Femalecondom use for men who have sex with men Questions 1. What are the advantages and drawbacks of femalecondoms for men who have sex with men? 2. What future research and development should be done regarding the use of femalecondoms for men who have sex with men? Key Take-Home Messages Men who have sex with men who have used a femalecondom often complain of irritation, bunching up, unpleasant texture, noise, discomfort upon insertion, lack of pleasure, slippage, breakage and relatively high cost.(1-4) Men who have sex with men have also cited increased sensitivity and flexibility, spontaneity and ease of use, increased comfort, and the perception that they were stronger and safer (1;4) as reasons
Functional performance study of an adapted design of the woman'scondom: a crossover, noninferiority, randomized clinical trial. We aimed to assess the functional performance and safety of a modified Woman'sCondom (WC2) against the existing FC2 femalecondom. This randomized clinical trial enrolled 287 women in one South African site. The primary outcome of the study was the rate of femalecondom failure ( = .001), misdirection ( = .000) and slippage ( = .004). The WC2 femalecondom performs as well as the FC2 femalecondom and offers good stability during use. Results from this study will inform further refinement of this femalecondom design, resulting in a new and potentially less expensive Woman'sCondom.
Comparison of self-reported femalecondom failure and biomarker-confirmed semen exposure. To investigate whether rates of self-reported Woman'sCondom (WC) clinical failure and semen exposure from a functionality study are comparable to results from a contraceptive efficacy substudy. We structured our comparative analysis to assess whether functionality studies might credibly supplant contraceptive efficacy studies when evaluating new femalecondom products. Couples not at risk of pregnancy in the functionality (breakage/slippage/invagination/penile misdirection) study and women in the contraceptive efficacy study completed condom self-reports and collected precoital and postcoital vaginal samples for up to four uses of the WC. Both studies used nearly identical self-report questions
Short-term acceptability of femalecondom use among low-fee female sex workers in China: a follow-up study. Low-fee female sex workers (FSW) lack power to effectively negotiate male condom use with clients. Femalecondoms (FCs) may provide an alternative strategy. This study was conducted to assess the acceptability of FC use among low-fee FSWs, and to identify appropriate candidates for future
Acceptability of the Woman'scondom in a phase III multicenter open-label study. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of the Woman'sCondom (WC) over 6 months (183 days) and ≥6 menstrual cycles in a US-based multicenter open-label phase III contraceptive efficacy trial. We assessed acceptability via written questionnaire at visit 2 (after the third cycle) and visit 3 (after the sixth
, health, and civil staff (β = 1.50, t = 2.92, p < 0.01) were positively related to acceptability. It was predicted that migrants' acceptability of the Woman'sCondom would significantly increase over time (β = 1.09, t = 5.54, p < 0.01). The findings indicate that the Woman'sCondom enjoyed relatively high short-term acceptability among migrants in China. In order to popularize the Women'sCondoms Short-term acceptability of the Woman'sCondom and influencing factors among internal migrants in China. The Woman'sCondom, a newly designed condom for women, has obtained market approval in China, but it remains relatively unfamiliar to the migrant population. The aim of this study is to evaluate the short-term acceptability of the Woman'sCondom and influencing factors among internal migrants
Functional Performance and Acceptability Evaluation of the Miss Liberty FemaleCondom Compared to the FC2 FemaleCondom The purpose of the study is to evaluate the functional performance and acceptability of the Miss Liberty femalecondom version 1 (Miss Liberty femalecondom), compared to the FC2 femalecondom. The study will be a sequential randomised 2-period cross-over trial comparing five uses of the Miss Liberty femalecondom, compared to the control FC2 femalecondom. Each woman will be asked to use five Miss Liberty femalecondoms, and five FC2 control femalecondoms in a randomised order. Woman will complete a Condom Use Report after each condom use. Function, safety, and acceptability will be assessed at each of two follow-up visits conducted after using each set of five condoms
Acceptability of Phoenurse femalecondom and second-generation Femidom femalecondom in Chinese women. To compare the acceptability of Phoenurse femalecondom (PFC) and second-generation Femidom femalecondom (FC2) among Chinese women. A randomized, cross-over clinical trial was carried out in women aged 20-49 years seeking family service in Qingdao, China, between April and October 2013. Women were classified into two groups using a computer-generated randomized sequence. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline and after using 10 of each type of femalecondom (FC). Of 290 women, 247 (85.2%) believed that FC could protect against sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. A total of 152 (52.5%) thought that the femalecondom (FC) contraceptive failure rate was higher, and 107 (36.9
Femalecondom acceptability and use amongst young women in Botswana The femalecondoms are a barrier method of contraception. The FC1 femalecondom is made from soft thin plastic called polyurethane and has been replaced by FC2 femalecondom, which is made of synthetic latex. The femalecondom is worn inside the vagina and acts as a barrier to prevent semen getting to the womb. It is about 75 % - 82% effective with normal use. When used correctly all of the time, femalecondoms are 95% effective. Despite evidence of its effectiveness, the use of the femalecondom has continued to face resistance from both women and men. The objectives of this study were to determine clients' level of knowledge of femalecondom, identify predominant methods of contraception, examine young women's views
A pilot study on the functional performance and acceptability of an innovative femalecondom (Wondaleaf®) in Malaysia Femalecondom (FC) has been available for over 30 years, but it still lacks wide acceptability. To overcome misdirection and invagination occurring in FC and to provide a wider area of protection, Wondaleaf (WL), a new-generation adhesive FC, was recently invented
Medicaid Reimbursement for the FemaleCondom. To examine state-level femalecondom use through Medicaid from 2004 to 2014, because in 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) allowed for expanded Medicaid coverage in many states, extending requirements for contraceptive care to more of the poorest women in the United States and to most women with private insurance. We collected data via brief survey of Medicaid offices in all 50 states between March 2015 and March 2016. The number of states providing Medicaid reimbursement for the femalecondom increased 33% (from 25 to 36) since 2007. Twenty-nine states provided data showing low numbers of claims for femalecondoms but high rates of reimbursement. This period of heightened access demands that the public health community
