Large Virtual Transboundary HazardousWaste Flows: The Case of China. The Basel Convention and prior studies mainly focused on the physical transboundary movements of hazardouswaste (transporting waste from one region to another for cheaper disposal). Here, we take China, the world's largest waste producer, as an example and reveal the virtual hazardouswaste flows in trade (outsourcing waste by importing waste-intensive products) by developing a multiregional input-output model. Our model characterizes the impact of international trade between China and 140 economies and China's interprovincial trade on hazardouswaste generated by 161,599 Chinese enterprises. We find that, in 2015, virtual hazardouswaste flows in China's trade reached 26.6 million tons (67% of the national total), of which 31
Emission characteristics and vapour/particulate phase distributions of PCDD/F in a hazardouswaste incinerator under transient conditions Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) emission characteristics and vapour/particulate phase partitions under three continued operation conditions, i.e. shut-down, start-up and after start-up, were investigated by sampling
Comprehensive diagnosis of PCDD/F emission from three hazardouswaste incinerators Comprehensive diagnosis of polychlorinated dibenzo--dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) emissions was systematically conducted on three hazardouswaste incinerators (HWIs). Results indicated that PCDD/F mainly existed in the solid phase before the bag filter. This was especially true for higher chlorinated dioxin
A study of staff׳s awareness and attitudes towards the importance of household hazardouswastes (HHW) management (A Case Study of Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Kermanshah, Iran) The present study aimed to assess the levels of staff׳s awareness and attitudes towards the importance of household hazardouswastes (HHW) management at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences (KUMS , maintaining and improving the health of families, societies and environment. It should be noted that prevention of adverse environmental effects of hazardouswaste is a priority, which can be realized through applying proper management methods.
Reduction-melting extraction of trace elements from hazardouswaste glass from an old glasswork’s dump in the southeastern part of Sweden At the southeastern part of Sweden, old art and crystal waste glass has been identified as a hazardouswaste due to high weight concentrations of Pb (32.398%), Cd (0.085%), and As (1.976%). The reduction-melting technique was used to investigate , 2 g of carbon, and 120 min of melting time. The reduction-melting method displayed promising results which might help in recycling the extracted trace elements and glass compared to the current used solution of landfilling as hazardouswastes.
An Improved Multi-Objective Programming with Augmented ε-Constraint Method for HazardousWaste Location-Routing Problems Hazardouswaste location-routing problems are of importance due to the potential risk for nearby residents and the environment. In this paper, an improved mathematical formulation is developed based upon a multi-objective mixed integer programming approach. The model aims at assisting decision makers in selecting locations for different facilities including treatment plants, recycling plants and disposal sites, providing appropriate technologies for hazardouswaste treatment, and routing transportation. In the model, two critical factors are taken into account: system operating costs and risk imposed on local residents, and a compensation factor is introduced to the risk
HazardousWaste Compliance In Health Care Settings Pharmaceutical waste has become an urgent public health and environmental protection issue in recent years, leading to a variety of sometimes-conflicting federal and state legislation and regulations that health care entities must take seriously.
Potential of HazardousWaste Encapsulation in Concrete Compound Combination with Coal Ash and Quarry Fine Additives. Coal power plants are producing huge amounts of coal ash that may be applied to a variety of secondary uses. Class F fly ash may act as an excellent scrubber and fixation reagent for highly acidic wastes, which might also contain several toxic trace elements. This paper evaluates
Indoor Air Contamination from HazardousWaste Sites: Improving the Evidence Base for Decision-Making At hazardouswaste sites, volatile chemicals can migrate through groundwater and soil into buildings, a process known as vapor intrusion. Due to increasing recognition of vapor intrusion as a potential indoor air pollution source, in 2015 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released
Application of geographical information system in disposal site selection for hazardouswastes The aim of this study was to provide a scientific method based on Geographical Information System (GIS) regarding all sustainable development measures to locate a proper landfill for disposal of hazardouswastes, especially industrial (radioactive) wastes. Seven effective factors for determining hazardouswaste landfill were applied in Qom Province, central Iran. These criteria included water, slope, population centers, roads, fault, protected areas and geology. The Analysis Hierarchical Process (AHP) model based on pair comparison was used. First, the weight of each factor was determined by experts; afterwards each layer of maps entered to ARC GIS and with special weight multiplied together
PCDD/Fs in plasma of individuals living near a hazardouswaste incinerator. A comparison of measured levels and estimated concentrations by PBPK modeling. The construction of the first and, until now, only hazardouswaste incinerator (HWI) in Spain finished in 1998. To assess its potential impact on the population living in the vicinity, a surveillance program was established. It includes

Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Nagoya Protocol, Cartagena Protocol, and Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of HazardousWastes for exporting infectious substances in Annex 5. Dual-use and strategic goodsThe concept of dual-use refers to items, including infectious substances and related materials, that have both civilian and potential military applications regulations, such as Dual-use and strategic goods regulation, CITES, Nagoya Protocol, Cartagena Protocol, Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of HazardousWastes, and notifications and registration requirements for importing infectious substances in Annex 5
compounds into the environment as they degrade. Batteries are also associated with explosion and fire risk (12). When improperly discarded, vapes leach heavy metals, such as mercury, lead and bromides, as well as battery acid, lithium and nicotine into the environment (14). Some vapes contain enough toxic chemicals to qualify as hazardouswaste (15). life cycle of a product or processes includes a clear understanding of the end-of-life pathways. Treatments of waste are used to disinfect and sterilize infectious and sharp waste.13 Incineration of waste is used to remove hazardouswaste and reduce the volume into ashes and gases, however the method includes exposure risk to staff if the operational requirements are not met.1, 13 These are all
. Papers cited within the findings section are were all foundas a result of the original searches conducted in November 2019.Nicotine itself is toxic hazardouswaste, and among tobacco products, cigarette butts constitutethe largest amount of waste and are considered environmental hazards.1,2Vaping products are considered hazardouswaste generators, with a range of compounds andchemical content. Among disposable vaping products, lead content varies amongmanufacturers.1 One study showed that lead exceeded regulatory threshold for two out of the15 products tested.3 Now that schools and other settings confiscate or have to clean up vapeproduct discards, they have to treat all such products as hazardouswaste disposal.1,3E-liquid and vaping cartridges did not significantly decrease growth of microorganisms
-of-life pathways. Healthcare waste includes non-hazardous and hazardouswaste streams. Audits have been identified as a strategy to assess the types of waste generated in healthcare, as well as to promote strategies that support waste reduction and cost savings. Based on the EPA Waste Management Hierarchy,32 source reduction and reuse would help to address disposal of unnecessary supplies. For example -use medical device reprocessing is another pathway, conducted using a process approved by the Food and Drug Administration by a third party reprocessor, which reflects the emergence of circular supply chains within healthcare.25 Regulated medical waste is i ncinerated to address hazardouswaste and reduce the volume into ashes and gases, which should be further investigated to assess any
