Mindfulness Interfused with Humor: Insights From a Randomized Controlled Trial of a Humor-Enriched Mindfulness-Based Program. Both mindfulness and humor are inherently connected to well-being. Recent research found evidence for their combined effect in a joint training, the Humor-Enriched Mindfulness-Based Program (HEMBP). This study extends these findings by exploring (1) effects of Mindfulness -Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on different forms of humor, (2) differential effects of the HEMBP on outcomes compared to MBSR, and (3) whether the HEMBP and MBSR may alter worldviews. Ninety participants were randomly allocated to three conditions: the HEMBP, MBSR, and a wait-list control group. Participants' mindfulness, psychological well-being, life satisfaction, perceived stress, comic styles

Wild Florida mottled ducks demonstrate strong heterogeneity in their humoral innate immune response. The Florida Mottled Duck (Anas fulvigula fulvigula) is a unique subspecies of waterfowl whose range is limited to peninsular Florida, USA. As an endemic subspecies, Florida Mottled Ducks face numerous conservation stressors, such as habitat conversion and hybridization with non-native Mallards performed health assessments of Mottled Ducks in the Central Florida area. Specifically, we examined the humoral innate immune system, i.e., the plasma of Mottled Ducks in response to a common but extraneous pathogen: Escherichia coli strain American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) number 8739. We utilized a bactericidal assay ("bacterial killing assay" or BKA) commonly used in eco-immunology, to provide

Humor in parenting: Does it have a role? Despite the widespread use of humor in social interactions and the considerable literature on humor in multiple fields of study, the use of humor in parenting has received very little formal study. The purpose of this pilot study was to gather preliminary data on the use of humor in the raising of children. We developed and administered a 10-item survey to measure people's experiences being raised with humor and their views regarding humor as a parenting tool. Responses were aggregated into Disagree, Indeterminate, and Agree, and analyzed using standard statistical methods. Respondents (n = 312) predominantly identified as male (63.6%) and white (76.6%) and were (by selection) between the ages of 18-45 years old. The majority of participants reported

The success elements of humor use in workplace leadership: A proposed framework with cognitive and emotional competencies. This qualitative study aims to investigate the competencies and effectiveness of humor use in workplace leadership. By exploring the elements underlying successful and unsuccessful humor use, this research offers insights into the competencies required for leaders to leverage humor effectively. Adopting a qualitative inductive approach, fifteen individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, generating a dataset of 51 critical incidents of humor use. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to identify key themes, resulting in the identification of five central elements: Reading the context, Intention and motivation, Judgement and decision, Skillful delivery

Is Humor a Meaning Making Process? Investigating the Effects of Absurd Humor and Mortality Salience on Meaning in Life, Moral Identity, Belongingness, and Belief in a Just World. Both mortality salience and absurd humor have been found to elicit fluid compensation - the automatic process of strengthening unrelated beliefs in response to a meaning threat. Previous research has suggested that perceiving absurd humor to be funny decreases people's tendency to fluid compensate, suggesting that humor is a meaning-making process. However, these results may have been confounded by mortality salience effects. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the effects of absurd humor and mortality salience on multiple beliefs. In the current study, we aimed to conceptually replicate previous research

In Vivo Quantification of Anterior and Posterior Chamber Volumes in Mice: Implications for Aqueous Humor Dynamics. Aqueous humor inflow rate, a key parameter influencing aqueous humor dynamics, is typically measured by fluorophotometry. Analyzing fluorophotometric data depends, inter alia, on the volume of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber but not the posterior chamber. Previous humor volume, which is very dissimilar to the situation in humans. Anterior chamber volumes in 2-month-old BALB/cAnNCrl and C57BL6/J mice were 1.55 ± 0.36 µL (n = 10) and 2.05 ± 0.25 µL (n = 10), respectively. This implies that previous studies likely overestimated the aqueous inflow rate by approximately twofold. It is necessary to reassess previously reported estimates of aqueous inflow rates

Antigenic drift expands influenza viral escape pathways from recalled humoral immunity. Initial exposure to a rapidly evolving virus establishes B cell memory that biases later responses to antigenically drifted strains. This "immune imprinting" implies that subsequent exposure to a drifted strain can induce affinity maturation of memory B cells toward cross-reactivity with the drifted strain

Humoral and cellular immune responses after 6 months of a heterologous SARS-CoV-2 booster with the protein-based PHH-1V vaccine in a phase IIb trial. The HIPRA-HH-2 was a multicentre, randomized, active-controlled, double-blind, non-inferiority phase IIb clinical trial comparing the immunogenicity and safety of the PHH-1V adjuvanted recombinant vaccine as a heterologous booster against homologous booster with BNT162b2. Interim results demonstrated strong humoral and cellular immune response against the SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-Hu-1 strain and the Beta, Delta, and Omicron BA.1 variants up to day 98 post-dosing. Here we report that these responses with PHH-1V are sustained up to 6 months, including in participants over 65 years, despite their smaller sample size. The PHH-1V booster was non-inferior

IL33 protects from recurrent C. difficile infection by restoration of humoral immunity. Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) recurs in one of five patients. Monoclonal antibodies targeting the virulence factor TcdB reduce disease recurrence, suggesting that an inadequate anti-TcdB response to CDI leads to recurrence. In patients with CDI, we discovered that IL33 measured at diagnosis predicts future recurrence, leading us to test the role of IL33 signaling in the induction of humoral immunity during CDI. Using a mouse recurrence model, IL33 was demonstrated to be integral for anti-TcdB antibody production. IL33 acted via ST2+ ILC2 cells, facilitating germinal center T follicular helper (GC-Tfh) cell generation of antibodies. IL33 protection from reinfection was antibody-dependent, as mMT KO

The impact of HBsAg reduction via siRNA treatment on natural and vaccine (BRII-179)-induced HBV-specific humoral and cellular immune responses. The impact of HBsAg reduction from small interfering RNA (siRNA) treatments on HBV-specific immunity of CHB participants has not been adequately analyzed in human. We conducted a phase 2a study treating CHB participants with 9 4-weekly doses of HBV % of the participants for at least 32 weeks after combinatory treatment. Moreover, the neutralizing ability of the anti-HBs positive sera was associated with HBsAg reduction. SiRNA-induced HBsAg reduction may contribute to the persistence and efficacy of the humoral arm of HBV-specific adaptive immunity in CHB participants receiving therapeutic vaccine BRII-179.

Increased aqueous humor levels of endothelin-1 in patients with open angle glaucoma. Endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor and contributes to the regulation of vascular perfusion. Aberrant endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels in aqueous humor have been reported across a variety of vascular diseases of the eye, including glaucoma. These findings suggest that dysregulation of ET-1 production may contribute to glaucoma pathophysiology. In this study, aqueous humor from patients undergoing ocular surgery was assayed for ET-1 abundance and related to the presence of glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma patients (n=62 total) from the ophthalmology clinics of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics were enrolled in this study and organized into three distinct cohorts based on their diagnostic criteria, including
