Skin tone discrimination and birthcontrol avoidance among women in Harris County, Texas: a cross-sectional study. Structural racism plays a major role in reproductive health inequities. Colorism, discrimination based on skin color, may profoundly impact reproductive health access and service delivery. However, quantitative research in this area is limited. We administered an online survey themselves in the lightest skin tones, whereas almost one in five women classified themselves in the darkest skin tone palates. Darker skin tones had increasingly greater odds of reporting that they avoided seeking birthcontrol out of a concern for discrimination compared to the lightest skin tone. After adjusting for race/ethnicity and sociodemographic variables (model 3), darker skin tones remained
Retail Availability of Over-the-Counter BirthControl Pills at Texas Pharmacies: Results from a Mystery Caller Study. To estimate the availability of the recently released over-the-counter (OTC) birthcontrol pill (Opill®) in retail pharmacies and compare availability across pharmacies based on their chain status and setting. In April and May 2024, we conducted a mystery caller study of a sample of 500 Texas retail pharmacies. Sampled pharmacies were contacted by female project staff posing as potential customers and asked whether they had OTC birthcontrol pills in stock and, if not, whether they could be ordered. We characterized pharmacies by chain status (independent pharmacy, chain pharmacy inside retail outlet, chain pharmacy with standalone location) and, using geolocation, as located
The use of condoms and other birthcontrol methods among sexually active school-going adolescents in nine sub-Saharan African countries. Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa still face sexual and reproductive health challenges. Contraceptives have been used to address these challenges. Despite efforts at national and global levels, contraceptive uptake among young people in Africa remains a challenge due to personal, societal, and health systems-based barriers. We estimated the prevalence and correlates of condom use and other birthcontrol methods among sexually active school-going adolescents in nine sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. We conducted a secondary analysis of the Global School-based Student Health Surveys (GSHS) datasets pooled from nine SSA countries. We included a sample
Male contraception is coming: Who do men want to prescribe their birthcontrol? To assess men's preferences for healthcare provider from whom they would obtain hormonal male contraceptive (HMC) methods. We asked participants from 3 clinical trials of investigational HMC methods-an oral pill (11β-Methyl-19-nortestosterone-17β-dodecylcarbonate, 11β-MNTDC), intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
"Did I Choose a BirthControl Method Yet?": Health Care and Women's Contraceptive Decision-Making. In the United States, unintended pregnancy is medicalized, having been labeled a health problem and "treated" with contraception. Scholars find women's access to contraception is simultaneously facilitated and constrained by health care system actors and its structure. Yet, beyond these barriers
BirthControl Connect: A randomized trial of an online group to disseminate contraceptive information. We sought to test whether participation in an online group including IUD users influenced IUD-related knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among IUD non-users, as a proof-of-concept evaluation of information dissemination for less commonly used or novel contraceptives. We conducted a blinded , randomized controlled trial on the effect of online communication with IUD users within an online program called BirthControl Connect. Participants were women age 18-45 living in the United States who had never used an IUD. We invited participants randomized to the intervention to join two-week, nine-member discussion groups including four satisfied IUD users and five IUD non-users; we invited control
Patient-provider communication before and after implementation of the contraceptive decision support tool My BirthControl. To compare differences in patient-provider communication among patients who, prior to contraceptive counseling, used or did not use a decision support tool ("My BirthControl") which has educational and interactive modules and produces a provider printout with the patient's they had gained knowledge from the tool. Observed counseling differences suggest the tool may have a positive impact on patient-centeredness of contraceptive counseling, consistent with findings from the main study. My BirthControl shows potential for improving patient-centeredness in counseling without extensive provider training.
A mixed-methods study of provider perspectives on My BirthControl: a contraceptive decision support tool designed to facilitate shared decision making. Barriers to the provision of patient-centered contraceptive counseling include time limitations, frequent misconceptions and misinformation about methods among patients, and the availability of numerous contraceptive options, which increases the complexity of contraceptive decision making. Decision support tools are interventions designed to facilitate quality decision making in preference-sensitive decisions. We evaluated the impact of a contraceptive decision support tool, My BirthControl, on providers' experience with contraceptive counseling. We interviewed 15 providers who participated in the intervention arm of a cluster randomized
Cluster Randomized Trial of a Patient-Centered Contraceptive Decision Support Tool, My BirthControl. Research suggests the need for improvement in the patient-centeredness and comprehensiveness of contraceptive counseling. My BirthControl is a tablet-based decision support tool designed to improve women's experience of contraceptive counseling and to help them select contraceptive methods that are consistent with their values and preferences. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of My BirthControl on contraceptive continuation, experience of contraceptive care, and decision quality. Using a cluster randomized design, randomized at the provider level, patient participants interested in starting or changing contraception interacted with My BirthControl before their family planning
Infertility, impaired fecundity, and live birth/pregnancy ratio in women with epilepsy in the USA: Findings of the Epilepsy BirthControl Registry. To determine the current risks of infertility and impaired fecundity as well as the live birth/pregnancy ratio among women with epilepsy (WWE) in the USA and whether antiepileptic drug (AED) use is a factor. These retrospective survey data come from the 2010-2014 Epilepsy BirthControl Registry (EBCR) Web-based survey of 1000 WWE in the USA, aged 18-47 years, who provided demographic, epilepsy, AED, reproductive, and contraceptive data. This study explores the needs and concerns of teens and young women residing in Washington, D.C. to inform implementation of this service. In this community-based participatory research study, four focus group discussions were conducted in February 2017, two with teen females aged 14-17 years and two with young

Association of Unintended Pregnancy With Spontaneous Fetal Loss in Women With Epilepsy: Findings of the Epilepsy BirthControl Registry. If unintended pregnancy is common among women with epilepsy and is associated with increased risk of spontaneous fetal loss (SFL), it is important to develop guidelines for safe and effective contraception for this community. To assess whether planned pregnancy is a determinant of SFL in women with epilepsy. The Epilepsy BirthControl Registry conducted this web-based, retrospective survey between 2010 and 2014. It gathered demographic, epilepsy, antiepileptic drug (AED), contraceptive, and reproductive data from 1144 women with epilepsy in the community between ages 18 and 47 years. Data were analyzed between March 2018 and May 2018. The primary outcome was the risk
[Effects of a Customized BirthControl Program for Married Immigrant Postpartum Mothers]. This study was conducted to develop a customized birthcontrol program and identify its effects on attitude, subjective norm, behavioral control, intention, and behavior of contraception among immigrant postpartum mothers. In this experimental study, Vietnamese, Filipino or Cambodian married immigrant postpartum mothers were recruited. They were assigned to the experiment group (n=21) or control group (n=21). The customized birthcontrol program was provided to the experimental group for 4 weeks. The experimental group showed a significant increase in the score of attitude, subjective norm, behavioral control, intention, and behavior of contraception. Findings in this study indicate that the customized
Are oral emergency contraceptives a safe and effective form of long-term birthcontrol? Yes, but not as effective as some other methods. Annual pregnancy rates in women using pericoital levonorgestrel 150 mcg to 1 mg range from 4.9% to 8.9%; menstrual irregularity is the most common adverse effect (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, Cochrane review of lower-quality trials). In women younger
