Fish oil as a dietetic supplement of treatment with non-steroid anti-rheumatic drugs gives the patients subjective relief, the results of preliminary observations indicate the necessity of further, in particular double blind trials.

and concomitant RA in Korean patients with chronic HBV infection. We investigated 240 patients with HBV infection. Anti-CCP antibodies were measured by ELISA and rheumatoid factor (RF) by the latex fixation test. Patient records were reviewed, and a standard form was used to record all demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to joint symptoms

Comparative study of test kits for measurement of rheumatoid factors by the latex fixation test. The performance of 14 test kits for the measurement of rheumatoid factors by the latex fixation test was investigated; all results were expressed in IU/ml. Reproducibility and properties of control sera were also studied. It was found that half of the kits did not satisfactorily detect rheumatoid

Of 18 clinical variables, all but Heberden's nodes, palpable knee effusion, pain in both hands, and latex fixation test showed a significant association after adjustment for age. Neither one single variable nor a combination could predict radiographic osteoarthritis of the knee with reasonable accuracy and thus be applicable in clinical practice. The x ray film, therefore, keeps its place , morning stiffness, osteoarthritis in any joint, pain or stiffness, or both, in knees or hips when rising from seated position, and pain in knees or hips while climbing stairs; and from the physical examination: Quetelet's index, Heberden's nodes, bony enlargement, palpable effusion, soft tissue swelling, limitation of knee function, pain with knee flexion, bony tenderness and, finally, the latex

Diagnostic and prognostic characteristics of the enzyme linked immunosorbent rheumatoid factor assays in rheumatoid arthritis. To determine the diagnostic and prognostic test qualities of the enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for rheumatoid factor isotypes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to compare them with the latex fixation test. Rheumatoid factor tests were performed in 1988 operating characteristic curves and post-test probability curves. The sensitivity of the ELISA for IgG, IgA, and IgM rheumatoid factor for RA versus all controls at optimal cut off titres was 72%, 44%, and 69%, respectively; the specificity was 52%, 84%, and 86%. For the latex fixation test the sensitivity was 66% and the specificity 91%. The post-test probability of RA, at a clinical prevalence rate

Clinical significance of rheumatoid factors in early rheumatoid arthritis: results of a follow up study. Serum rheumatoid factors (RF) were measured yearly in 135 women with rheumatoid arthritis by the Waaler-Rose and latex fixation tests and IgM, IgA, and IgG RF were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). The patients were followed up from an early phase of the disease

Standardisation of serological tests for rheumatoid factor measurement. Standardisation of quantitative data obtained by several types of rheumatoid factor test was achieved by the use of a reference serum preparation. Interlaboratory comparability improved for the latex fixation test, the Waaler-Rose test, the IgM RF test by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA

) In systemic lupus erythematosus there was phagocytosis of IgG, IgM and C3 from serum (indirect test), IgM not being correlated with the latex-fixation test and probably of antinuclear antibody nature. Phagocytosis decreased after treatment of the disease. Sera from many other rheumatic disease frequently gave weak IgG phagocytosis, but rarely did IgM or C3. (4) IgG, and sometimes C3, was frequently taken up

No obvious cause for this phenomenon was found. (6) Several reasons for the marked difference in prevalence of RA between this urban African population and a rural African population are considered. Marked intraracial differences

Such changes as were encountered on clinical and radiological examination were invariably mild; no respondent in the entire survey had clinical features that would have been accepted in the ordinary way as those of rheumatoid arthritis. IgG-RF exhibited lower complement fixing ability than IgM-RF and correlated with agglutination
