Microstomia is associated with functional impairment and is a poor prognostic factor in systemic sclerosis - a single center observational study with survival analysis. Objectives were to assess the mouth opening ability (MOA) among patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in comparison to a healthy control population. The impact of microstomia (decrease in any of the MOA parameters) on physical performance and long-term survival was also investigated. Interincisal (ID), interlabial (LD), the intercommissural distances at both opened mouth and closed mouth (OW, CW) and the oral area (OA) and circumference (OC) all were assessed in 131 SSc patients. Microstomia was defined based on the oral aperture values of a healthy control group (n = 63) with similar median age and sex distribution. Tests

A mixed method study exploring patient satisfaction and feasibility of two exercise programmes in systemic sclerosis-associated microstomia. SSc often leads to fibrotic cutaneous involvement of the face and reduced oral aperture, with impaired food intake and oral hygiene. Oral exercises can increase oral aperture but are often hampered by low adherence rates. The aim of this mixed method study was to explore the feasibility, patient satisfaction and effectiveness of two exercise programmes in SSc-associated microstomia. Adult patients suffering from SSc and microstomia (maximal oral aperture <40 mm) were randomized to two groups. Group A exercised with a jaw motion device (Therabite), whereas group B performed mouth-stretching exercises. Patients were expected to exercise for 10 min, three times per

Rehabilitation for a scleroderma patient with severe microstomia using digital and conventional methods. Microstomia is a principal clinical symptom in patients with scleroderma. It is characterized by an abnormally small mouth opening, which makes traditional prosthetic rehabilitation difficult. First, the primary impression and jaw relation record were acquired using an intraoral scanning rehabilitation in scleroderma patients with severe microstomia.

A comparison between two educational methods in the rehabilitation of the microstomia in systemic sclerosis: a randomized controlled trial. To test the effectiveness of an educational intervention including "face to face" training, compared to a standard information program, to reduce microstomia in women with systemic sclerosis. Single-blind, two-arm, randomized controlled study with a 12-month ; in the control group, the increase was 0.13 cm (95% confidence interval: 0.01-0.25),  = 0.06. The difference in improvement between the two groups was not statistically significant ( = 0.10); however, it reached statistical significance in the per-protocol analysis (39 patients,  = 0.02). Face-to-face nursing rehabilitation training seems to improve microstomia to a greater extent, when compared to a standard

Implant-Retained Obturator for an Edentulous Patient with a Hemimaxillectomy Defect Complicated with Microstomia . A 68-year-old man was operated on for squamous cell carcinoma (T3N3M0) of the maxilla creating the hemimaxillary surgical defect on right side. The remaining arch was completely edentulous. There was remarkable limitation in the oral opening with reduced perimeter of the oral cavity becomes a challenging task due to limited access to the oral cavity. This challenge becomes even more difficult if the patient is edentulous and there are no teeth to gain the retention, stability, and support. . In severe microstomia prosthesis insertion and removal can be achieved with modification of the maximum width of the prosthesis. Dental implant retention is useful treatment option

Complete Denture in a Microstomia Patient Microstomia is the term used to describe a condition of reduction in the size of oral aperture which can be either acquired or congenital and affects the quality of life. Dentists occasionally come across patients with constricted oral openings. Limited oral opening makes access to the oral cavity for any dental procedure difficult. It's the duty of a dentist to provide every possible care to the patient with microstomia. This paper describes the treatment of a microstomia patient requiring complete dentures using sectional dentures. The cause of microstomia in the indexed patient was developmental in nature as all other causes of related conditions were ruled out. Finally upper and lower complete denture with sectional components were given

Hyaluronidase Via LADD Scleroderma-induced Microstomia Two treatment methods, ablative CO2 laser and intradermal hyaluronidase, will be combined to maximize the beneficial potential of each. Laser-assisted drug delivery (LADD) has been shown to be effective for the administration of medications in diverse skin diseases but not previously reported for the treatment of scleroderma-induced microstomia. By using this laser technique, the investigator can reduce the pain of typical hyaluronidase injections and reap the therapeutic benefit of the laser treatment itself. The investigator's goal is to create greater mouth mobility for chewing and speaking as well as improved oral hygiene, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. Each participant will undergo three separate laser sessions at 4

Lock and key cast metallic sectional denture: a revised approach for oral rehabilitation of a patient with microstomia Microstomia is a common occurrence in clinical practice that may hinder the conventional prosthetic treatment of edentulous patients. Oral augmentation exercises to increase the vertical opening and sectional or collapsible dentures have been described in the past, which have their own drawbacks and limitations. The present article highlights a new approach for rehabilitation of a patient with microstomia with cast lock and key attachments leading to greater ease for both the patient and the clinician. The chief advantage of this technique is the simple fabrication procedure and the reduction in the denture base thickness, providing a larger intraoral space and thus better

Hyaluronidase in Treating Oral Microstomia in Patients With Sclerosing Skin Disease The principal objective is to measure the degree to which oral microstomia caused by sclerosing skin disease improves after treating patients with local hyaluronidase injections. Investigator will determine improvements in oral aperture by measuring the centimeters of the height of oral opening. The secondary objectives are: Investigator will aim to assess changes in quality of life and functionality, by serial calculations of the Mouth Handicap in Systemic Sclerosis (MHISS). In addition, investigator would like to investigate how many treatments are required prior to treatment efficacy plateauing. Since there is minimal data on the use of hyaluronidase for oral microstomia, it is not yet clear how many

Prosthodontic Management of a Completely Edentulous Patient with Microstomia: A Case Report Patients with microstomia who need to wear removable dental prosthesis often face difficulty of being unable to insert or remove the prosthesis because of restricted opening of the oral cavity. Prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with microstomia presents difficulties in all the clinical steps . In such patients, it is difficult to make impressions and fabricate dentures using conventional method. This clinical report describes prosthodontic management of a completely edentulous patient with microstomia developed due to oral sub mucous fibrosis. Sectional maxillary denture was fabricated using a sectional impression tray technique. With the use of magnets and palatal midline press button attachment

A Case of Microstomia Subsequent to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Surgically Treated by Simple Technique Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare but severe adverse dermatitis that is an autoimmune reaction to drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. TEN most severely affects the mucous membranes including the mouth and could develop into microstomia; however, microstomia in relation to TEN has rarely been reported in the literature. We describe an adult female patient who developed microstomia due to scar contracture of the bilateral oral commissures subsequent to TEN and was successfully treated by a simple surgical technique consisting solely of transverse incision of the commissure and longitudinal closure.

Microstomia: entry made easy in no entry (with sectional tray and sectional denture) Reduced mouth opening or microstomia is a frequently encountered condition in the field of prosthodontics. Microstomia is a challenge for prosthodontics right from impression making till the insertion of the prosthesis. Making impressions in patients with microstomia is often cumbersome for both patient with microstomia using modified impression tray design and maxillary split denture.
