Perioperative respiratory complications in intracapsular tonsillectomy and total tonsillectomy: Is there a difference? The primary objective was to determine any difference in perioperative respiratory complications in children undergoing intracapsular tonsillectomy versus those undergoing total tonsillectomy for sleep-disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. All children undergoing total tonsillectomy from November 2015 to December 2017 and intracapsular tonsillectomy from May 2016 to July 2020 for sleep-disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea were included in the study. 2408 patients underwent total tonsillectomy whereas 410 patients underwent intracapsular tonsillectomy. The incidence of major respiratory complications was 13.9 % for intracapsular tonsillectomy and 8.9

The use of tranexamic acid for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage: A scoping review protocol. Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) is a highly studied outcome of tonsillectomy with serious consequences. Various treatments and interventions have been utilized to decrease post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage. The off-label use of tranexamic acid (TXA) is of growing interest to control PTH but has not been incorporated in management guidelines. This scoping review plans to summarize existing studies from the scientific literature on the use of tranexamic acid for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage. We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews or Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The review will cover studies including patients undergoing tonsillectomy who were treated

Outcomes of abscess tonsillectomy in patients awaiting tonsillectomy: A comparison with interval tonsillectomy. Peritonsillar abscesses (PTA) occasionally occur in patients who have a concurrent history of recurrent tonsillitis or prior PTA episodes. These patients sometimes meet the indications for elective tonsillectomy even prior to the current PTA event. Abscess ("Quinsy") tonsillectomy (QT ) could serve as definitive treatment in this specific subgroup, though it is not performed often. The purpose of this study was to compare the perioperative outcomes between immediate QT and tonsillectomy performed several days (delayed QT) or weeks (Interval tonsillectomy, IT) after incision and drainage (I&D) of the PTA in this specific subgroup. A retrospective perioperative outcomes analysis

Tonsillectomy and risk of post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage - a protocol for a randomised clinical trial. Tonsillectomy is one of the most common procedures in the ear, nose and throat field, and 7.7% of the Danish population had undergone a tonsillectomy by the age 20 years in 2012. One feared complication is post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage (PTH), which in a Danish register-based study was found to increase from 3% in 1991 to 13% in 2012. PTH represents a significant risk and deaths are reported in the literature. The aim of the trial is to compare hot and cold haemostasis during tonsillectomy and assess, firstly, the risk of PTH and, secondly, the reported pain perception. This is a single-centre, two-arm, interventional randomised controlled trial. The study targets patients > 12 years of age

Prevalence of electronic smoking exposure and tonsillectomy surgery in children. The hypothesis tested was the negative impact of electronic smoke exposure on the developing of respiratory infection, specifically in the upper tract. In this study, we aimed to investigate if smoke exposure increased the number of tonsillectomy surgery in children compared to the hernia repair control group . The design of our study was retrospective case-control. We retrospectively reviewed medical records or children of up to 12 years of age that were admitted for tonsillectomy at King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) from January 2019 to December 2023 to determine exposure to both electronic and tobacco smoking. Records of hernia repair surgery children aged 12 and less at this facility were also

Effects of branched-chain amino acids on changes in body composition during the recovery period following tonsillectomy. In recent decades studies have examined body weight changes following tonsillectomy. In nutrition science, the focus has shifted from body mass index to body composition analysis. However, no studies have explored body composition changes post-tonsillectomy. In oncology and digestive surgeries, the potential benefits of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) have been investigated; however, their effects on pharyngeal surgery remain unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the body composition changes after tonsillectomy and to explore the potential benefits of branched-chain amino acids. This prospective interventional controlled study enrolled 48

Intracapsular tonsillectomy improves children's postoperative behavior measures. Tonsillectomy represents one of the most frequently performed surgical interventions in pediatric otolaryngology (Bohr and Shermetaro, 2023) [1]. The selection of surgical technique plays a crucial role in determining multiple aspects of postoperative recovery, including pain management, healing trajectory , and behavioral adaptation (Karam et al., 2022; Lin et al., 2024). This investigation sought to evaluate the differential impacts of coblation intracapsular tonsillectomy (CIT) versus traditional cold dissection total tonsillectomy (TT) on postoperative behavioral patterns in pediatric patients. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive comparison of postoperative behavioral outcomes between pediatric

Global tonsillectomy practice patterns - A survey study of pediatric otolaryngologists. There is variation in surgical techniques and postoperative management of tonsillectomy globally. Our objective was to consolidate international similarities and differences in tonsillectomy management by pediatric otolaryngologists. This cross-sectional survey study was conducted from April 4 to May 16, 2024 and currently practicing pediatric otolaryngology. Among respondents, the majority primarily performed extracapsular tonsillectomy (44.7 %), followed by those who used both intracapsular and extracapsular tonsillectomy equally (34.8 %), and those who predominantly performed intracapsular tonsillectomy (20.5 %). Ideal patient candidates for extracapsular tonsillectomy included those with recurrent tonsillitis

The effect of tonsillectomy on clinical manifestations in Familial Mediterranean fever. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most prevalent genetic autoinflammatory disease worldwide. There are several novel advancements in pathophysiology, genetic testing, diagnosis, comorbidities, disease-related damage, and treatment strategies. This study aimed to assess the effect of tonsillectomy on FMF disease severity and activity. This prospective randomized cohort study was conducted on 43 patients diagnosed with FMF and chronic tonsillitis, who were divided randomly into two groups: Group I, a case group including 23 patients subjected to tonsillectomy and medical treatment using colchicine; Group II, a control group consisting of 20 cases receiving only colchicine. Parental anxiety and catastrophizing in pediatric tonsillectomy pain control: A multivariate analysis. Parental anxiety and/or catastrophizing may bias the interpretation of children's pain and administration of analgesia post-tonsillectomy. We aimed to determine whether high levels of parental anxiety and/or catastrophizing impact child pain intensity interpretation and administration a minimal significant decrease in the odds of analgesia administration was observed on postoperative day 7 (OR 0.932, p = 0.017). Maximal parental anxiety did not predict higher odds of increased child postoperative pain intensity on any postoperative day. Parental catastrophizing prior to tonsillectomy has minimal predictive value for analgesia use postoperatively. Children may be successfully advocating

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) After Pediatric Tonsillectomy: An Opportunity for Quality Improvement. There is emerging evidence showing even a single episode of transient acute kidney injury (AKI) in children can have negative long-term health consequences. AKI may be under-recognized in children undergoing tonsillectomy because of unique risk factors, such as recommended use of NSAIDs and restricted oral intake pre- and postoperatively. A consecutive case series with chart review was performed for patients under age 18 years at a single tertiary care institution who underwent tonsillectomy between July 1, 2013 and May 17, 2024, identified by CPT codes for tonsillectomy. ED visits within 30 days of surgery were documented. Serum creatinine values at ED visit were recorded, if available

Risk Factors Associated With Pediatric Post-Tonsillectomy Complications: A Focus on Racial, Ethnic and Socioeconomic Factors. Though a common procedure, tonsillectomy is often associated with significant risks such as bleeding, odynophagia, and dehydration. There has been some research investigating racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in other pediatric otolaryngic issues such as otitis media and sleep disordered breathing. However, there is a paucity of research regarding disparities in children undergoing tonsillectomy. A retrospective case control study was performed on all pediatric patients who underwent tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020 at a tertiary care center. Patient records were documented including demographics, race
